Dalwhinnie
It was built by Alexander Mackenzie in 1897, near the Allt an t-Sluic spring, essential for the purity of its waters; in Gaelic Dalwhinnie means "meeting place": the distillery is located on a site, in the Highlands region, where the herdsmen meet and rest. The distillery in 1926 was acquired by the Distillers Company (today part of DIAGEO). Originally the barley was malted over a fire of locally cut peat, today it is ordered lightly peated. The whisky it ages in ex Bourbon American oak barrels for longer than usual, due to the altitude and humidity.
