Gin

Gin is an alcoholic-based distillate obtained mainly from the fermentation of cereals such as barley, corn, rye or wheat, to which a mixture of aromatic plants called botanicals is added, including juniper, which gives the gin its characteristic aroma and taste. When creating gin, you go through several stages, including distillation and infusing the botanicals, which can happen during the production of the alcohol or through a vaporization process.

Once the base distillate is obtained, the gin can be diluted with water to reach the desired alcohol content and can undergo further steps such as aging or flavouring.

History of Gin

The history of gin dates back to the 17th century in the Netherlands, where its predecessor, known as "genever", was used for its medicinal properties. Initially, it was considered a remedy against rheumatism and as a tonic to improve blood circulation, but it soon spread as an alcoholic drink also appreciated for its flavor and relaxing properties.

During the Eighty Years' War, genever was introduced to England by Dutch troops, who brought it with them during battles. It was here that it became popular among the local population, who appreciated its unique taste and stimulating properties. As time passes, the production and consumption of genever they spread throughout Europe, leading to the birth of gin as we know it today. Gin soon gained worldwide fame, becoming a key element in mixology and cocktail culture. In the following years, gin became increasingly popular among the European upper class and nobility, who appreciated its sophisticated taste and versatility.

Gin varieties

there numerous varieties of gin around the world, each characterized by its unique combination of botanicals and production methods. Other types include Plymouth Gin, produced in the city of Plymouth, London Dry Gin, characterized by a dry taste and a pronounced juniper aroma, and Old Tom Gin, sweeter and less dry than London Dry.

Two other types are the Navy Strength andOverproof.

It is said that before 1816, there was no precise way to determine the alcohol content of spirits. Thus, inspired by the methods of the British Royal Navy, the terms "Overproof" and "Navy Strength" were coined. To evaluate the alcoholic strength of the gin and rum embarked on ships, a little gunpowder was mixed with the distillate, then, using a magnifying glass and taking advantage of sunlight, they tried to make it ignite. If the liquid caught fire, it was considered to be of "Navy Strength"; if it exploded, than "Overproof". However, if nothing happened, it meant that the distillate had been watered down too much and had too low an alcohol content.
