Famous Grouse
Wheno Matthew Gloag died in 1860, the family business portfolio focused primarily on wines, and his son, William Gloag, largely continued this trend. Following the Great French Wine Blight, around 1875, the company began looking to create their own whisky blended. But it wasn't until 1896 that Matthew Gloag III inherited the business from William, and the company registered its first blended Scotch, the "Brig o'Perth".
In 1896, William's grandson Matthew Gloag (1850-1912) took over the family business. He created a new mixed brand called "The Grouse" in 1896.
Matthew Gloag & Son's limited company was formed in 1905 and in the same year Grouse was renamed "The Famous Grouse" due to its thriving reputation as a quality Scottish brand. As if to underline the family bond, it was Matthew III's daughter, Phillippa, who designed the very first, and now famous, "Red grouse" (Scottish ptarmigan) that adorns each bottle.
Today, as in 1905, it is still the whisky best-selling overall in the UK and uses malts from Highland Park, The Macallan and Glenturret, all owned by the Edrington Group as "The Famouse Grouse" brand. The blend of column malts and distillates that come from the North British Distillery in Glasgow takes place in the Glenturret distillery. The marriage lasts up to six months and guarantees the balance between the various liquids.
