Fettercairn
The Fettercairn Distillery was founded by Alexander Ramsay way back in 1824 in Aberdeenshire in the Highlands of Scotland. Founder Ramsay was one of the Scottish landowners to fight in the campaign for the distillation license of scotch whisky. In 1829 Fettercairn was sold to the Gladstone family and their son William Gladstone, British Prime Minister, is remembered for codifying the "Angel's Share", the percentage of whisky equal to 2% which is lost every year due to evaporation and on which distillates would no longer be taxed. Gladstone also introduced legislation which allowed for the first time to sell the whisky in glass bottles.
Today the owner of Fettercairn is Whyte & Mackay which later became the property of Emperador and boasts a production of whisky aged from 12 to 50 years appreciated all over the world.
The symbol of the distillery is a unicorn which was adopted as an emblem of Scotland by King Robert in the late 1300s and is meant to symbolize purity and power.
