Mortlach
The Mortlach distillery was built in 1823 on the edge of Dufftown, in the area where an illegal "MOONSHINE" still operated. Mortlach continues to be one of the most mysterious distilleries in the region and will undoubtedly remain its cult status for many years. It is known as the "Beast of Dufftown" (small town in the Speyside region, originally called Mortlach), due to its very strong and rich flavor compared to other whisky in the region, it was the first legal distillery in the area. For twenty years William Grant worked in the distillery as an employee before resigning in 1886 to start his own business and open the GLENFIDDICH. The distillery was owned for a time by J&J Grant of Glent Grant. He uses 6 old-style coil Worm Tubs, which gives the distillate a decidedly richer flavor.
