History Rum Venezuela
The fascinating history of rum in Venezuela, as with most tropical countries, begins in colonial times, when the fertile valleys of the country were permeated by the sweet scent of sugar cane brought by the Spanish colonizers. Over the centuries, this ancient tradition has evolved, mixing cultural influences and distillation techniques from every corner of the world. Today, Venezuela stands as a major player in the global rum scene, celebrated for its artisanal quality and extraordinary variety of flavors that capture the imagination of drinkers around the world.Over the centuries, prominent figures such as Don Juancho Nieto Meléndez e Gregorio Aristides Andrade have distinguished themselves in refining distillation techniques and elevating the reputation of Venezuelan rum beyond national borders.
Production methods and varieties of Venezuelan Rum
Venezuela is famous for its rum production, which ranges from light, fresh varieties to rich, complex aged spirits. Among the best-known varieties, white rum stands out, obtained from a pure distillation that captures the fresh essence of sugar cane; the golden rum, characterized by a harmonious blend of sweet and spicy flavors, the result of a slow and meticulous aging; and finally the aged rum, which draws inspiration from the deep roots of the Venezuelan tradition. The latter is carefully matured in oak barrels which give the distillate nuances of caramel, vanilla and dried fruit, creating an enveloping and unforgettable sensory experience. In addition to the traditional varieties of rum, Venezuela is also known for its distinctive and innovative production techniques. Many Venezuelan distilleries still use artisanal methods passed down for generations, such as natural fermentation and the aging process in fine wooden barrels. However, some companies are also experimenting with new production techniques, such as using different varieties of sugar cane or adopting innovative aging processes, to create unique and surprising rums. This combination of tradition and innovation contributes to the diversity and excellence of Venezuelan rums.
In Venezuela, the rum production process begins with the extraction of molasses from sugar cane, followed by fermentation and distillation to obtain a high-quality alcohol. This alcohol is aged in white oak barrels for at least two years, following the laws and regulations established by Regulatory Council of the Venezuelan Ron. The rum is then diluted until it reaches 40 degrees and subjected to filtering.
The master distillers carry out a sensorial evaluation of the colour, appearance, aromas and flavors before applying the seal of “Controlled Designation of Origin Ron de Venezuela”, reserved for the best Venezuelan rums. Alcohol losses during the aging process are not compensated with added spirits, in accordance with Venezuelan regulations.
Venezuelan regions authorized to use DOC for rum production include Sucre, Táchira, Cojedes, Lara, Miranda, Trujillo, Yaracuy, Portuguesa, Monagas, Aragua, Barinas and Carabobo.
Venezuelan rum is highly prized on the international market, with exports estimated at around 2 million cases per year, reaching countries such as Spain, France, Mexico, Chile, Italy and the United States.
