The Tomatin distillery was founded in 1897, during the boom of whisky Scottish (1973-1984). Today, with twelve stills in operation, Tomatin remains one of the largest malt distilleries in Scotland. The site mainly produces whisky in the classic sweet and fruity Highland style, but also makes for a small amount of whisky peppery Scottish. Tomatin is Gaelic for "hill of juniper bushes". The distillery at 315 meters above sea level is considered one of the highest altitude distilleries in Scotland. The whisky it ages mostly in ex Bourbon American oak casks and in some large ex Sherry casks.
