Scotch Whisky

Scotland is a very fascinating country thanks to the beauty of the landscapes, with imposing mountains, fjords, lakes, islands, valleys, castles, for the history rich in myths, legends and romantic atmospheres but, it is also because it is produced here Scotch Whisky, a model to follow for many producers, all over the world. Today there are about 150 active distilleries throughout Scotland and are distributed in 6 regions specialized precisely in the production of Whisky Scottish. The enological concept of terroir is perhaps an exaggeration when it comes to whisky, due to the standardization of raw materials (water, barley, yeasts) which allow greater efficiency than in the past. If technology has taken away part of the magic, the aging in barrels, real living organisms, still retains the beneficial effect of uniqueness. We have summarized some of the main characteristics for each of the six production areas of the Scotch Whisky

Highlands

The Highlands represent the largest production area, covering more than half of the Scottish territory. The Scotch Whisky it is central to the Scottish economy, and some of the distilleries in this area are among the most famous in the world: Oban, Glendronach, Glengoyne, Clynelish and Balblair are just a few names, but the list is full of excellence. It is impossible to speak of a unique style, also because the historicity of many of these distilleries is felt in the peculiarity of the raw material, the distillation stills and the practices in the aging warehouses. There are distilleries overlooking the sea, both towards Europe and towards the Atlantic Ocean, just as there are companies that arise in the middle of the wonderful internal territory.

The Highlands area can be divided into four smaller areas, namely:

For all these areas there are representative distilleries, even if unifying the taste is difficult and not entirely technically correct. However, each area has pursued a path towards excellence by creating extremely satisfying malts: the names mentioned are just a few from which to choose your own. Scotch Whisky.

Islands

Talking about the Islands of Scotland without mentioning the scenic beauty is impossible: here tourists from all over the world delight in looking for the perfect angle to take a photo shoot, with the combination of sea, hills, beaches and lush vegetation. There are 790 islands of Scotland, 99 of which are inhabited, and distilleries of Scotch Whisky, some with legendary fame like Talisker. The character of these whisky it is often peated, certainly the maritime influence is felt with many small nuances. Peat is present and characterizes many Scotch Whisky of the Islands: peat is the traditional fuel of the fires from which the steam that goes to smoke the malted barley in the first phase of production originates. Historically, peat has always been used on these islands because it is easily available and cannot be replaced by coal, which would have had to cross the sea to reach the islands. That is why peat is still used today.

Islay

Inside the islands stands Islay, the most important island of Scotch Whisky, with a unique concentration of legendary distilleries: Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Caol Ila, Ardbeg, Bunnahabhain, Bowmore, Bruichladdich and the recent Kilchoman and Ardnahoe. The island is of rare beauty, the gentle inland hills overlooking the sea create unique landscapes facing the Atlantic Ocean. With a few exceptions, it is Scotch Whisky of Islay is firm and peaty, with marine notes coming into play. The history of distillation is ancient, the first official distilleries date back to the period between 1700 and 1800, distilleries still active today, some of which have entered the hearts of enthusiasts from all over the world. Islay is synonymous with Scotch Whisky. Every whisky of Islay has a strong character, to know. In addition to the distilleries, Islay has the unique charm of the unexplored territory, also offering remnants of Celtic civilization, spectacular sunsets and suggestive bays. The inhabited centers, small and characteristic, seem to suggest a leap into the past and the habits of the few inhabitants are simple and adapt to a different passage of time, in slow motion.

Lowlands

The Lowlands represent the southernmost part of Scotland, characterized by a regular and more inhabited territory, with an important number of distilleries closed during the 80s, due to the crisis of the Scotch Whisky which hit some myths hard, such as Rosebank and Littlemill. The surviving distilleries have a light and elegant style, with, in the case of Auchentoshan, the characteristic of triple distillation as opposed to the traditional double distillation.

Speyside

Speyside is considered part of the Highland territory, but given the concentration of distilleries, the need arose to create its own appellation. Here some now mythological distilleries were born, among which Glen Grant, Macallan, Glenfiddich, Aberlour, Glenlivet stand out, but the list is much longer. Wandering around this part of Scotland it is impossible not to find a distillery except for short stretches, the concentration is unique, as is the secret recipe of each company, giving birth to many glorious bottles and also to brands that, over the years, they have conquered important slices of the market. The production is massive and, although there are some truly giant distilleries in terms of annual production, there are also less impressive realities as much as they are linked to a different dimension. On both sides you can find Scotch Whisky excellent, just as it is possible to compare different labels and different production practices, making the tasting even more fascinating.

Campbelltown

Another productive jewel is the Campbeltown Peninsula, a few hours by ferry from the Isle of Islay and the Isle of Arran. The history of Campbeltown is glorious, counting dozens of distilleries of Scotch Whisky open and productive in the first part of the twentieth century. Today the situation has radically changed, with only three distilleries dividing this corner of Scotland. Springbank is located here, a distillery that is finding great favor among enthusiasts for personal and high-quality selections, thanks also to the social role that the establishment has for the entire surrounding community.
