700ml BOTTLE
Oban is one of the best-known Scottish distilleries in the world, thanks to a widespread distribution all over the world. The Highlands distillery overlooks the sea and produces around 800.000 liters of whisky per year divided between very few official releases. Founded in 1794, the small distillery is in the town center and this forces it to distill at set times, as well as visits to the distillery which remain limited. In any case, the Oban distillate has great personality and manages to combine maritime intensity and the elegance given by a skilful refinement.
Oban Little Bay is the newest addition to the core range and owes its name to the small casks used to age the whisky. The procedure is a little more complex: the distillate ages partly in ex Sherry barrels and partly in ex Bourbon barrels, before continuing the refinement after the union in small 200 liter ex Bourbon barrels. This particular of the small barrels should favor a faster refinement, giving life to a whisky of great elegance and depth, with the added characteristics of the distillery.
TASTE
Good intensity, spices, black pepper and ginger arrive, combined with smoky and balsamic, maritime and iodized notes. The fruity part comes later, apple and pear, with touches of honey and citrusy traces of cedar and orange.
AGING
American ex Bourbon barrels and European ex Sherry barrels.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS ABOUT WHISKY OBAN LITTLE BAY
The beauty of the whisky of Oban lies in the details: the distillery, despite being among the best known in the world, has a rather restrictive production constraint as the plant is located in the middle of the homonymous village, forcing production in certain time slots and of the year, while other plants far from civilization have the possibility of distilling all year round, every day and all day, with the remarkable mechanization of the production phase.
In this Diageo has been farsighted, preferring to keep a limited quantity - even if already of a moderate level - instead of closing the plant and reopening it a few kilometers away, as it would have had the right to do: the multinational has preferred to leave things as they are, allowing the internal Oban team to maintain their functions, in the same four walls where the same is produced whisky for over two centuries, for one of Scotland's oldest distilleries and certainly one of the beacons of the Scotch in the world.
