Whisky Laphroaig Quarter Cask

700ml BOTTLE

Laphroaig has an enviable tradition, the result of over two centuries of history, a history entirely dedicated to the distillation of whisky peaty, always of great quality. The distillery is located on the south coast of the island of Islay, in Scotland, a neighbor of some of the major Scottish distilleries, but with the right personality to emerge. The sea is a fundamental ingredient both of the scenic beauty in which the distillery is located, and in the whisky in which mineral, iodized and medicinal notes of great intensity are perceived.

The story related to the Laphroaig Quarter Cask is peculiar: it is a whisky without a declaration of age which completes its aging in smaller barrels than the classic 250-litre American Barrel Standard (ABS), but small 125-litre oak barrels, barrels which guarantee faster aging thanks to the lower ratio between wood and distillate. Furthermore, the refinement process takes place in the famous Warehouse 1, the oldest in the distillery and directly overlooking the sea, making the sea an ingredient even more evident.

TASTE

Intense and smoky, grilled meat, bacon and paprika, then peat and medicinal, maritime notes of iodine, salt and seafood, licorice root and black pepper. Very long finish, oceanic.

AGING

Large American ex Bourbon barrels and then small barrels.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS ABOUT WHISKY LAPHROAIG QUARTER CASK

Dealing with Laphroaig always means being able to count on a trusted friend, on a distillery which, despite the passing of the years and some changes at the top, guarantees continuity and a pleasant taste which, for peat lovers, is a true declaration of love. Laphroaig can count on a growing production capacity which allows internal selectors to choose only the best barrels to package their labels.

Today Laphroaig enters the market with a few more labels than at the beginning of the XNUMXs, labels that have become necessary for a radical change in the consumption of whisky and for the expansion of world markets which today require much more whisky compared to the past. Having to combine the main characteristics of his work, Laphroaig has chosen to exploit the smaller barrels to give a sort of sprint to the whisky content: having a greater ratio between surface and content, the whisky undergoes a greater micro-oxygenation and the refinement benefits from it.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask is not a whisky hasty, rather is a whisky of evident intensity that encloses the prerogatives of Islay malt, or the peated part, the positive influence of the sea a stone's throw from the place where this whisky is produced, the typical medicinal and licorice notes that could be recognized among thousands whisky. Laphroaig Quarter Cask is a whisky dedicated to those who want to dive into the world of whisky peaty and to those who want to return with mind and heart to this paradisiacal island. The slightly higher alcohol content than usual is a further contribution to the experience, being able to count on an immediately recognizable intensity. Therefore, have no doubts about giving a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask to those who love you: a gift that is literally worth a journey, a journey to be experienced sip after sip.

INSIGHT ON WHISKEY LAPHROAIG QUARTER CASK

Laphroaig Quarter Cask is proof that big barrel is not necessarily synonymous with whisky better, indeed. In fact, thanks to the contribution of the Quarter Cask barrel, the refinement of this whisky is accelerated and the indomitable spirit of Laphroaig finds a good traveling companion, a small wood that manages to smooth out the most difficult corners to face, adding volume and substance to obtain a result before the eyes of anyone who puts their nose into it.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask was born as an experiment with these smaller barrels, the so-called Quarter Casks, which are nothing more than smaller barrels than the traditional ex-bourbon barrels that are used so much today and even smaller than the 600 liter ex-sherry barrels that are today used less and less due to availability issues. Wanting to give a new touch to your own whisky, Laphroaig has seen fit to test these barrels which actually come from the past, when it was difficult to move the whisky if not with small wooden barrels that could be easily transported on carts, when the internal combustion engine was still an illusion and the horses and men's shoulders had to do most of the work.

Let's take a leap into the past, when the United Kingdom imposed important tributes on anyone who distilled, even if only as a quirk and warning to the Scottish people by the subjects of the Queen (or the King): in that historical moment the active distilleries were different but the difficulty of keeping one's business out of the spotlight of local debt collectors was great. The possibilities of being able to move large quantities of whisky they were low and smaller barrels were used, which were easier to move and above all to hide, perhaps under a load of cereals or other agricultural products.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask wants to be a tribute to this glorious and distant past: wanting to test this type of refinement, the Laphroaig technicians realized the potential of this aging method, an aging that goes at double the normal speed, as there is a relationship between wood and content much higher than the standard ex bourbon barrel.

Laphroaig has never held back from the possibility of innovating its core range: after having dominated for decades with the classic Laphroaig 10 Years Old, the time has come to tighten the screws and announce a new product which today, nearly twenty years after its first release, it is a solid constant in the Laphroaig ecosystem. Being able to give oneself time for a new product is a luxury that only adults can afford, even from the perspective of today's consumer, who is less attentive to the declared age and more to the substance in the glass, with an eye for the history of the distillery and the choices which led to the creation of a whisky of this type.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask is a solid choice to start approaching the whisky peated Scotch, to take a trip to the island of Islay and to get to know this splendid distillery, a global treasure and source of as many delights as there are stars above Islay.
